Dear Mr. Bun,

Is there really such a thing as a teacup dog?

Signed,
Perplexed Yorkie in New York

Dear Perplexed Yorkie,

We get emails all the time asking where to buy "Teacup" dogs. Well, simply put: nowhere. There is NO SUCH THING as a "teacup" Yorkie, Shih Tzu, Maltese, etc. These are all "Toy" breeds, members of the AKC "Toy" group. The size range of these breeds is set by the "breed standard." Visit AKC to learn more about breed standards.

If someone is trying to sell your human a "teacup," tell him or her to be very wary!

Also, be suspicious of extraordinary prices! Pet quality dogs seldom go for $3000-$5000. Be cautious, ask questions, and if at all possible, visit the breeder, inspect his or her facilities, and request to see the mother of the puppies. I put some links below that may be helpful.

Yours faithfully,

Mr. Bun
